Christian Nationalism Doesn’t Just Threaten Our Nation – It Threatens Our Faith. “Give therefore to the emperor the things that are the emperor’s, and to God the things that are God’s.” – Mark 12:17
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.
As we are faced with Republican cries for Christian Nationalism, we are not tuned into how un-American this is. It is the same playbook used in NAZI Germany prior to WWII. At the same time, non-Christians, Jews, Islam, Hindu, Buddhists are being vilified and stripped of rights. It is important to understand the United States and our Democracy was formed to be explicitly agnostic towards any religion. When formed, most of the European immigrants fled Europe where Kings and Queens forced their citizens to adopt, attend and pay for the “king’s church.”
Because of this, the United States FIRST Amendment prevents the government from creating or establishing a religion. The FIRST Amendment prevents the power of the government from expanding beyond civil matters. The FIRST Amendment protects peoples’ right to worship however they choose, or to not worship any God at all. Yet, most of our political process and our perceptions suggest the first amendment is SOLEY about freedom of speech. That is not the case.
